Chapter 7 Thoughts

The final phase in the DDD-E model is evaluation. You need to obtain feedback from others during the development process, before you publish your webpage or other multimedia element. Even though this phase is presented last, evaluation effects the entire process.

How will you use evaluation in your project?
How do you see evaluation in your classroom?

  1. Our project includes a few different assessment techniques, including a poem or song writing activity and open-ended questions. These can help teachers evaluate student learning for understanding.

We will also incorporate an element for users to evaluate our website.

In my classroom, the school library, I may not formally evaluate students since grades are rarely assigned for library activities. However, I may work with teachers to develop criteria for projects that incorporate research or other use of the library.

  2. Project:
I think evaluation is an important part of a project, and I strongly despised at work when there was no time set aside to reflect on points of accomplishments or challenges in a project. For this project, I liked that we are conducting a self and group evaluation. If we as students did not get value from the project, then clearly the project was ineffective in achieving the goal. For the website, we will include assessment techniques that offer students to reflect on the lesson plans and challenge them to think metacognitively about their learning. In addition, the user review is important as well to ensure that teachers can improve the management, organization, etc for future lessons.

    Classroom:
In one sense, evaluation in the classroom is a judge of the teaching ability of the teacher. I want my students to evaluate their learning process, to self assess what they know and how they got there. I think it may give them a deeper understanding of their learning style. I think that evaluation in my classroom is an opportunity to share feedback about themselves, their classmates, and myself as a teacher. In the science classroom, it is especially critical given the teamwork required in labs and other hands on activities.

  3. I like the last statement in the description given above: evaluation effects the entire process. Indeed this is true. Evaluation is the measure of how effectively you modeled and followed DDD.

Our project, to the best of our abilities, targets multiple forms of evaluation. The assessments we have for each lesson and for the website hopefully provide a full range of evaluative methods to accurately asses participants understanding of the material and therefore our effectiveness in presenting the lessons. In addition, we will be evaluating ourselves by offering an assessment for the project that will reveal how well we followed the DDD model.

In my classroom, I hope to really engage students' thinking by evaluating their understanding of the material instead of their recall and ability to remember. I would also like to incorporate evaluation of myself just as we will do in our project for this class.

  4. Evaluation is the basic decider of whether or not your efforts were successful and effective for classroom understanding.

For our project, we're hoping that every lesson's evaluation process will ensure that the user/student is well-informed and ready to move on to the next subject area. The results from either their comments or quiz answers will allow us to look closely at whether or not the information and materials supplied are clear, concise and effective. If materials are satisfactory, then the website has achieved it's main objectives. If the site is not producing desired results, then it is our duty to go back into the site and clarify where necessary and create a better learning tool for future students.

In my classroom, I hope to employ the above attitude that if it hits the mark and is a great success then it should be continued and taken to new levels. If the instruction efforts fail, then it is my duty to either seek out individual students to see whether it is an isolated issue or if there is a problem with the overall design of the lesson plan/multimedia project.

  5. Our project has multiple choice questions, open ended questions, and a song that students will create. We are going to also incorporate an assessment for the user to assess how the site navigates and if learning was obtained.

In my future classroom evaluation will occur on a daily basis from my interactions and observations with my stuents. I'm a fan of alternative assessments and will utilize them as often as possible. The projects that I recall as a young student were ones that were either portfolio based or performance based.

  6. Our project incorporates both performance based (create a rap, song, or poem/open-ended questions) and quantitative based assessments (multiple choice questions). Both of which I think a teacher could use in the classroom.

I think if I can design my lessons with the end (evaluations) in mind I can create a learning environment that will promote higher level thinking and where performance based assessments would demonstrate student knowledge/mastery of concepts and "big pictures".
