Chapter 5 Thoughts

Here is where you learn about the actual production of the WHAT is going into your multimedia project. The project will include graphics, animations, audio, digital video, text, hyperlinks, etc.

What do you think about this chapter? How can you incorporate new meanings into prior knowledge?

  1. Chapter 5 presents some information that I was already familiar with (specifically, the information about graphics and video) and some that was new to me (the information about animations and audio). I found it enlightening to learn about the differences between frame animations and path animations, and why MIDI files are so small.

As far as incorporating new meanings into prior knowledge, readings about graphics and video helped me think about how they can be used in our group project. Although I have created graphics and video before, I never spent much time considering the size of the files. This becomes important when you're using them on a website. Also, it's always good to be reminded about copyright, an issue that is near and dear to librarians.

  2. Reading this chapter allowed me to open up my mind with regards to our project. Our group has come up with some good ideas thus far, but now I have a clearer understanding on how to integrate more technology into our project. I was somewhat familar with the various audio and video formats prior to reading this chapter but I didn't realize I have most of these programs already on my computer. For example, I have a mini digital video camera that will upload to my laptop (after the newer cord is shipped to my house). Very cool ideas.

  3. I found the guidelines included after each summary of a multimedia type. They were helpful and informative. I had no idea that there were such simple and general rules that can be followed. I thought it would be more complex but this chapter made it much simpler.

  4. This is the part of the prject that is going to be absolutely fun! Multimedia isn't just a tool so students can understand, it is so we can all learn together! I've always been curious about different media elements, and I am so excited to get to learn how to use them. I always see such intricate webpages, and I think "how did they do that?" It's now my turn to answer my own curiosity. Even when using graphics, I never knew there were bitmapped graphics and vector graphics. Until I read this chapter, it was all the same, but I now know that they're different. I am also interested in using editing tools for voice and animation. These techniques will be incredibly useful for creating the group project, but more importantly, they'll just be good for general knowledge.

I use an iPod on a daily basis. I purchase mp3s and listen to them. I'll ocassionally listen to podcasts. But I've never created an mp3 or a podcast, so it should be interesting! I also use my digital camera to upload photos on to different websites.

  5. Chapter 5 introduced a lot of new things for me. Most of which I've never even heard of. Having said that, I do think that I will be able to practice and become proficient at may of the skills. The information was presented in a clear and simple manner so that a beginner (like myself) can perform many of the tasks.

  6. I am familiar with most of the types of media elements introduced in this chapter. However, the graphic file formats, digital audio file formats, and digital video file formats is not something I considered before, and is something I can incorporate into my knowledge base. As a user, I simply downloaded or saved the files as suggested, and usually a program on my computer was able to play the media file. For music, I mostly download MP3s.

On the other hand, as the creator of the file, I must give careful consideration of the types of file formats. I wished the text provided a video converter, though we touched on it in class.

I also enjoyed this passage within the guidelines for video: "check the size of the video files after they are recorded, especially if you are going to transfer them to a floppy diskette or via the internet." I hope to save all my media on a floppy going forward :) JK
